Name of The Game Here is ‘Literacy’

(Excerpt from SouthBendTribune.com)

Two new literacy centers are opening this fall to enrich the educational experiences of South Bend area children. The National Council on Educating Black Children is working with the Indiana Department of Education, Memorial Hospital, South Bend Community Schools and other local groups to put in place after-school programs in science, math and reading, as well as extracurricular activities at the Charles Martin Youth Center and New  Generations Christian Ministries.

This is just the kind of partnership that our schools need for support and a very positive way to bolster students whose families may not otherwise be able to provide a foundation equal to that of their peers. Everybody gets an A+ for this initiative.

NCEBC supports life-long learning through its various national programs including the National Literacy Initiative, Parent University Curriculum, and multiple mentoring programs. The introduction of core-components of the nationally renowned MegaSkills program developed by the National Home and School Institute (HSI) promotes the NCEBC mission to not only involve parents as key stakeholders to education, but also empower them, regardless of their own academic and social affluence.

On Saturday, August 13, 2011, the NCEBC hosted a Back-to-School Event for parents and caregivers whose children participated in the inaugural NCEBC Summer School Program, offered in partnership with MSD of Lawrence Township and the Indiana Department of Education with the support of the 21st Century Community Learning Center program sponsored by the US Department of Education.   (read full article here)

NCEBC Joins Historic Civil Rights Organizations on Education Push

(7/26/10)

“The National Council on Educating Black Children (NCEBC) has been engaged in the development of a Civil Rights Framework (submitted today to the Office of the US Secretary of Education, Mr. Arne Duncan) that calls on the Obama Administration to “revamp” the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) by leveraging federal resources available to all states.  For the past quarter century, the NCEBC has promoted educational policy awareness and community stakeholder accountability through the National Blueprint for Action by which several areas of recommended focus per the “Framework for Providing All Students an Opportunity to Learn through Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act” are implemented on a state-wide level, addressing challenges and community-identified core issues that impact educational outcomes for youth, particularly African American Boys.”
