Parent Involvement

NCEBC’s Parent University Curriculum is the model for parent advocacy and student voices. This model is based on the belief that the constituents who are most affected by the dismal educational conditions facing Black boys are the parents who bear the burden when these students fail to graduate and the students who cannot find jobs to sustain themselves or take care of their own families after dropping out of school. Therefore, if conditions for this population are going to improve, then the constituents themselves must lead the campaigns for change.

The proposed new strategy enhances the NCEBC’s Parent and Family section of the Blueprint for Action. The creation of a Parent University Curriculum ensures that parents and families are prepared to advocate for equity issues, to ensure that African-American children are afforded maximum access to a high quality of education. The Parent University Curriculum is a series of workshops and professional development activities that will increase the knowledge and skills needed to “build the public will” on behalf of African-American children.
